Clare Olding

Hi! I’m Clare.

I’m a graduating student of a double degree in product design engineering and environmental science. Throughout my time at university I have worked as a student engineer and in outdoor education, with experience in the disability sector.

Due to my work and science background my projects tend to focus on accessibility and sustainability. I have a particular passion for inclusive and collaborative design practice.

In my time as a mechanical engineering intern I was responsible for quality investigations, spending a lot of time on the factory floor and designing trials for scientific analysis of product failure.

My passion for science has led to a strong basis in first principles engineering, and I enjoy applying this core knowledge to abstract design problems.

The Butterfly Board - Inclusive Communication

A tactile and affordable alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) device designed in collaboration with teachers, occupational therapists, and speech pathologists. The design utilises compliant mechanisms for the tri-stable rocker switches, lowering part count and overall cost. Aside from the case, all components are HDPE, allowing for disposal in standard kerbside recycling.

BonAppetit - Automated Icing End Effector

An end effector designed to extrude icing from an OEM syringe in two colours with consistent tool centre point. Rotating design to allow for colour change, and cam locking mechanism to grip plunger for extrusion.

FlowState - A repairable vacuum for the service industry and the circular economy

Robust, Intuitive and comfortable to both use and repair, FlowState is designed to last a lifetime by being repairable at a modular and component level.

Gaia - An accessible tap for the Melbourne Botanic Gardens

Designed in collaboration with people with lived experience of inaccessibility, Gaia challenges the idea that accessible design is aesthetically clinical. The leaf-shaped spout extender and long handle provide both functional accessibility and a sculptural aesthetic.

Selkie - A camping light for families

Designed as an alternative to the rugged aesthetic of outdoor products, Selkie combines a friendly aesthetic with all of the functionality. The rotating arm with carabiner clip acts as a hanger and a stand, and the solar panel on the back charges the light during the day.
