Bella Monk

I'm Bella Monk, I'll be a graduating student of the Bachelor of Architecture in 2025. My time at Swinburne has made my passion and drive for the built environment grow, developing stronger skills and architectural communication.

Architecture to me is not only a foreseeable career but it's a daily desire to change how we see the world, the buildings we use and the connection to it. I aim to push the limits in architecture, to create not just useful spaces but forms that are meaningful

I translate my design ideas and concepts best through hand sketching and drawing. It's a natural way that provides fluidity and freedom to the designer. There's something about the roughness and unique way of what you're visualizing through freehand typologies.

The Valley - Architectural Design Studio 5

The Valley is Newport's new identity, turning this landscape into a bustling entertainment hub and art precinct. "The Valley" is created through the formation of angular buildings which hug the sites boundaries, and create leading pathways, attracting visitors to all areas of the site. Soft arches and transparent parametric facade details line each buildings skeleton, providing shadowing and fluidity as you walk along the path.

The Valley - Architectural Design Studio 5

The Valley revitalizes the current heritage train museum, creating an underground cave displaying the trains and identity of the site. The site has a new children's train museum, with large public and private galleries and exhibition spaces in each building, as well as educational spaces with studios, workshops and an amphitheater. It was important to attract Newport's locals and visitors to the site, by creating a hospitality and entertainment precinct, with cafes and restaurants throughout. This is also translated in the new open market hall, with a greengrocer, bakery and deli.

Meridian - Architectural Design Studio 4

Meridian
731-739 Flinders St, Docklands aims to transform the current site into a new entertainment hub along the banks of Melbourne. As you begin your journey up the buildings sloped landscape, your eyes gaze down into the large ring like amphitheater. This space is unique and playful as it's connected to the Yarra River, when the tide rises, the stage of the amphitheater floods, and as the tide lowers the water recedes. Within this sloped landscape, is the sites apartments, with single studios and double story puzzle like 2 bedroom and Mezzanotte apartments that lock into one another influenced by Le Corbusier 'Unite d' Habitation'.

Senior Housing Scheme - Architectural Design Studio 2

'Expression' is Brunswick new senior housing scheme, focusing of using art and music to help seniors bring back passion and fun back into their lives. With the residences quarters encapsulated by the sites, gallery that continuously runs around the whole site. Which also creates a private space for residences inside this structure, with cores buildings are at different heights, widths and sizes, yet each space blends with the other.

Journey - Architectural Design Studio 1

'Journey' is pavilions that are scattered around a bare landscape, aiming to create pathways to 3 stations. Each pavilion was influenced by a song which reflected different typologies. Pavillion 1 uses 'Repetition + Theme', pavilion 2 uses 'Theme + Contour + Rhythm' and pavilion 3 uses 'Theme + Repetition'. These typologies were then turned into shadow and light exploration, for each station.
